Frequently asked questions about dyslexia therapy

Find answers to common questions about our services, approach, and what to expect from dyslexia therapy.

What is Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing. It is not related to intelligence, and with the right instruction, students with dyslexia can become successful readers.

What is structured literacy?

Structured literacy is an evidence-based approach that teaches reading and spelling in a direct, systematic, cumulative, and multisensory way. It is considered the most effective approach for students with dyslexia.

What is dyslexia therpay?

Dyslexia therapy provides explicit, systematic, and multisensory instruction that teaches students how the English language works. Therapy builds skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

What are common signs of dyslexia

Signs may include:

  • Difficulty learning letter sounds
  • Slow or inaccurate reading
  • Trouble spelling
  • Difficulty remembering sight words
  • Avoiding reading
  • Reading below grade level despite strong intelligence

Do you provide virtual therapy?

Yes! We provide one-on-one virtual dyslexia therapy for students throughout Texas. In-person sessions may be available depending on location.

What programs do you use?

We primarily use the Take Flight curriculum developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia at Scottish Rite for Children. For younger students, we may also use BUILD, depending on the student's needs. Both are evidence-based structured literacy programs.

Do students need a dyslexia diagnosis before starting?

Not always. While a formal diagnosis can be helpful, I can discuss your child's needs during a consultation and determine whether dyslexia therapy is appropriate.

How long are therapy sessions?

Most therapy sessions are 55-65 minutes and are typically held two to four times per week, depending on the student's needs and goals.

What are your qualifications

I am a Texas Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT) and a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). I have over 21 years of experience in public education and have been providing dyslexia therapy since 2019.

Do you accept insurance?

Most dyslexia therapy is considered an educational service rather than a medical service, so insurance typically does not cover it. I can provide receipts for your records if needed.

What can I do at home to help my child?

Reading together, practicing assigned activities, encouraging audiobooks, and maintaining a positive attitude toward reading can all support your child's progress.

How long will my child need therapy?

Every student is different. The length of therapy depends on age, skill level, consistency of attendance, and individual progress.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

I regularly monitor student progress through mastery checks, informal assessments, fluency measures, and ongoing observation. Parents receive updates on their child's growth throughout therapy.

Will my child have homework?

Yes. Short daily practice between sessions helps reinforce new skills and supports continued progress.

Do you offer services for private schools or homeschool students?

Yes. We provide individual therapy for homeschool students and can also partner with private schools to provide therapy during the school day.

Can parents observe sessions?

Parents are welcome to observe occasionally or discuss their child's progress. My goal is to partner with families throughout the therapy process.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept secure online payments through Stripe, as well as other approved payment methods such as Zelle or Venmo.

How do I get started?
